You will begin your journey south, along the Adriatic Sea, to the unique Costa dei Trabocchi. First, you will visit a medieval monastery built in an amazing location, which the ancient Romans chose for their temple. If you get lucky, you might even hear the holy music under the arches of the ancient church. Then, after a walk around a small town that was inaccessible to the invaders during middle age, you will explore a Traboccho and even taste the seafood delicacies during lunch there. After a truly Italian lunch you will walk around the medieval fortress, located on a picturesque cliff and then return to our rural home in order to enjoy the sunset behind the peaks of Gran Sasso.
After breakfast you are going to enjoy the magnificent San Clemente Abbey the first version of which was founded in 871 year by one of the Italian kings on a vow, given during his captivity. Then you will explore the wine cellar of XIV c. tasting unique example of the Abruzzo sparkling wine made with the classic method. After that you are visiting another family-run winery situated right in the center of the medieval town of Tocco da Casauria. Then you will have lunch in the local restaurant. The refreshing walk through the medieval towns’ narrow streets will lead you to the olive grove where you will discover true taste of Abruzzo Extra Virgine Olive Oil.
After breakfast, you will follow our guide on a walk around a small hill-top town Guardiagrelle – historically known for its blacksmithing – where you will visit a blacksmith workshop and a few city sights. You will also look into a local Pasticeria and taste the unique dolce, which is only made in this town. You will then continue the journey into nearby located medieval castle, where you can enjoy the sight of a castle church, then descend into the castle basements in order to try local wines in one of the oldest winery in the area.
After lunch you will move to a close-by medieval town Buchianico to see some of its most notable historical sights and to find out about the historic event, from which the country-famous holiday celebration originated. And then you will have a degustation of the best Italian cheese, salumi and wines in the family restaurant’s wine cellar, guided by its owner Claudio.
After breakfast, you will take a drive to the farm, where our neighbors produce cheese. While walking after the farm visite, you will enjoy the unique natural phenomenon of Calanchi. After that you will have lunch, tasting the wines and typical produce on the nearby wine cantina, combining this with a review of the technological process of wine making. This winery is a good example of a family-run winery . Then you will walk through the narrow streets of the medieval town, which bears the name of “Holy Angel”. The town was listed 6th in the Forbes list of cities that are best suited for retirement. You will explore the history of that town through its unconventional structure and church architecture, visit local artist’s gallery, have coffee in a local bar and enjoy the sea view.
You are waiting for a walk in the medieval village of Bominaco, visiting two very special medieval churches. Then you go up to the castle to see a breathtaking panorama. After that, you will be able to participate in the truffle hunt together with the owner of the truffle land and his two hunting dogs. There you will have lunch, dishes cooked with truffles.
On the way back you will drop into a small town of Capestrano with its Castello Piccolomini and located in a river gorge ancient church preserving the mystery of Quadrato del Sator.
You will spend the morning in a small mountain village, where almost every family has been making ceramics for several centuries. You will visit the church, which has been a source of inspiration for these masters throughout all that time. Afterwards, you will visit one of the oldest ceramic workshops in the village.
After lunch in a small village restaurant, you will travel to the Campo Imperatore for a short walk. You will explore Abruzzo from a bird’s eye view, while being on the ruins of a medieval fortress, which served as the set of several movies.
After breakfast, you are going to visit the city of Sulmona, which is located on a stretch of land that used to be a prehistoric lake. You will walk around the city, see some of the most important Abruzzese historic sites and visit a confetti fabric. After that you are going to walk to the cell of a medieval hermit who, for 5 months of his life, became one of the most unusual popes in the history of the Vatican.
You will have lunch at one of the best restaurants in the area in medieval town of Pacentro. After that you can stroll through this picturesque city and explore the medieval fortress on top of the hill.
You will see one of the most important relics of the Christian world, veil with the Holly Face.
Then you will make a walk along the creek in order to admire the temple hidden in the mountains, the first version of which was built in the time of Charlemagne.
A visit to the ancient city of Ortona and its Aragonese fortress on the Adriatic Sea, as well as the St. Thomas Basilica, important for all Christian pilgrims, where the relics of St. Thomas have been stored since the 13th century.
In the medieval city of Lanciano, there is a church where the third miracle of the Eucharist is stored. For lunch you can taste famous Italian Fish Soup in the special restaurant situated in Vasto.
An experienced pizzaiollo or a simple housewife – everyone in Italy makes amazing pizza. We will cook local-style pizzas under the guidance of our expert in the wood-burning stove of Torre dell’Angelo.
We will learn how for centuries Italian housewives have made fresh pasta. We will master the local tools and techniques, prepare the pasta with the sauce of your choice, and then eat the cooked.
Hiking along the gorge, visiting a monastic cell in a cave and an abbey carved into a rock.
You will visit a nearby cheese production, find out how it is organized, see how they produce fresh cheeses ricotta, mozzarella, and burrata.
Olive oil production at an internationally awarded family-owned factory. Tasting of olive oils and the story of the fourth-generation owner’s production.
You will have dinner at a table by the pool, and to the sound of music watch how olive trees are reflected in the water and how the sun sets over the mountain.
To the sound of live music in the garden, we will arrange for you a tea party with traditional Italian dolce.
At your choice, we will arrange for you one, two or three visits with tastings in different wine production. We will try to fully introduce you to the Abruzzo wine culture.
