Day 1 Immersion

You come to Torre dell’Angelo, where you immediately immerse yourself in the atmosphere of rural life. You can use this day to ‘switch gears’ to resting, start enjoying the beauty of the surrounding nature and tune in to your journey.

Day 2 From Etna to Gran Sasso

After breakfast, we will take a walk to the farm, where our neighbors produce cheese. While walking around the farm, we will enjoy the unique natural phenomenon of Calanchi. After that we will have lunch, tasting the wines and typical produce on the nearby wine cantina, combining this with a review of the technological process of wine making. This winery is a good example of a family-run winery and its owner will tell us about challenges that the wine industry faces nowadays.

Then we will walk through the narrow streets of the medieval town, which bears the name of “Holy Angel”. The town was listed 6th in the Forbes list of cities that are best suited for retirement. In the evening, these streets will transform into a stage for celebration of a holiday that unites the cultures, art and cuisines of two Italian regions. We will have dinner in the streets of the city accompanied by the sounds of folk music.

Day 3 Costa dei Trabocchi

After breakfast, we will begin our journey south, along the Adriatic Sea, to the unique Costa dei Trabocchi. We will visit a medieval monastery built in an amazing location, which the ancient Romans chose for their temple. If we get lucky, we might even hear the holy music under the arches of the ancient church.

Then, after a walk around a small town that was inaccessible to the invaders in the middle ages, we will explore a Traboccho and even taste the seafood delicacies during lunch there. After a truly Italian lunch we will walk around the medieval fortress, located on a picturesque cliff and then return to our rural home in order to enjoy the sunset behind the peaks of Gran Sasso.

Day 4 Town of spumante, wine and olive oil.

After breakfast we are going to enjoy the magnificent San Clemente Abbey the first version of which was founded in 871 year by one of the Italian kings on a vow, given during his captivity. Then we will explore the wine cellar of XIV c. tasting unique example of the Abruzzo sparkling wine made with the classic method.

After that we are visiting another family-run winery situated right in the center of the medieval town. We will have lunch in the garden of the monastery of Santa Maria del Paradiso. Then the refreshing walk through the medieval towns’ narrow streets will lead us to the olive grove where we will discover true taste of Abruzzo Extra Virgine Olive Oil.

Day 5 Antic craft and local wines

After breakfast, we will follow our guide on a walk around a small hill-top town Guardiagrelle – historically known for its blacksmithing – where we will visit a blacksmith workshop and a few city sights. We will also look into a local Pasticeria and taste the unique dolce which is only made in this town. We will then continue our journey into a nearby located medieval castle, where we can enjoy the sight of a castle church, then descend into the castle basements in order to try local wines in one of the oldest wine cantines in the area.

After lunch we will move to a close-by medieval town Buchianico to see some of its most notable historical sights and to find out about the historic event, from which the country-famous holiday celebration originated. And then we will have degustation of the local cheese, salumi and wines.

Day 6 The Knightly Joust

After breakfast, we are going to visit the city of Sulmona which is located on a stretch of land that used to be a prehistoric lake. We will walk around the city, see some of the most important Abruzzese historic sites and visit a confetti fabric. After that we are going to walk to the skete of a medieval hermit who, for 4 months of his life, became one of the most unusual popes in the history of the Vatican. We will have lunch there in a picnic style.

After that we will return to Sulmona to become spectators in a unique event – the Knightly Joust of Europe, where each city is represented by a delegation of figures in historical costumes that all come from different schools, such as ancient dance, weapons, arquebusiers, musicians, falconers, flag-wavers, actors, singers, charges of lansquenets, crossbows etc.
